North Georgia is beautiful. It's like the gateway to the Appalachians. Brasstown Bald is the tallest mountain in Georgia, around 4,800 feet. It's worth seeing! One thing that's cool about it is that it has a microclimate. It's much cooler than the lower areas around it. The park ranger told me once that the summit has a climate similar to Massachusetts. The summit should be open all summer. You can hike to the top or take a shuttle.

For a pretty city, I would suggest Charleston, South Carolina. The riverbank of Chattanooga and its environs is pretty. Take the DUCKS boat tour. For a pretty mountain area I would suggest Townsend, Tennessee in the Smokies. Lots of pull-off areas where you can take a wade in a mountain creek. Want a quintessential Southern town? Stop in Rogersville, Tennessee. It's even prettier than Mayberry and the people are probably friendlier, if you can believe it. For a slice of Appalachian Americana come to downtown Knoxville at noon time, Monday through Saturday. The Visitor's Center broadcasts a free live performance that is listened to world-wide via WDVX.

If you are in the southwestern Smokies, Cades cove is a must see. There's an 11 mile loop through a hidden valley with pioneer cabins, deer and turkey in abundance and the occasional bear. Warning: traffic is slow.
If you are driving through Knoxville at lunch or dinner time stop for a meal at any of the Market Square restaurants. Great people watching environment. Downtown Asheville is worth visiting for the hippie atmasphere and all the artisan's shops.
