Say what you want about Houston and Texas, it doesn't stop us from caring less, and it doesn't stop the city from having a very large and growing worldwide presence (they don't call it the energy capital of the world for nothing). It's obvious that your comments--like most people's-- about Houston are coming from a personal place, rather than an educated one (think back a few weeks).

And in case people didn't know yet, Houston is no longer (never really was) the fattest city in America, by Men's Fitness magazine's standards...Chicago is.

Now obviously the big players like NYC, Chicago, Boston, L.A., Washington, etc will likely retain their prominence for quite some time, but I see the west coast closing the gap.
Excellent point. LA is China's and Japan's largest trading partner and as "milquetoast" earlier alluded to, the Los Angeles Customs District became the first ever to surpass $300 billion in annual trade and the first ever to have $100 billion in imports with one nation (China).

As U.S. companies increasingly become more reliant on foreign manufacturing and packaging of good and services, the trading relationship with China and other Asian and Middle Eastern countries will keep LA at the center of the global economy.

Well stated! California packs a punch that New York, and cow pie Illinois will never have. When the 'big one' hits, Chicago is going to be in a bad state.

Funny, the "big one" usually refers to earthquakes. And when the 'big one' hits CA, who's going to be in a bad state? I forget.

Why dont you just live on a ticking nuke instead? At least you know when the nuke is going to go off. Dont come crying to the rest of the world when CA is once again reduced to rubble and ashes.

I think "rubble and ashes" is a bit extreme. Yes, there will be massive devastation for sure, but I don't think it's going to resemble a nuclear explosion.

If it happens today, and I die, so be it. I live my life for today (for the most part) and I'm happier today because I'm in California. I'll take whatever God is willing to give me here, over a 100 more years any where else (in the US).

I think you're right, which is why I'm going to avoid Houston discussions

Really though, if you love Houston, that's great - you are lucky (like me) to live in a place you love. So, be happy and don't let what others say bother you.

I'm well aware of the devastation caused by the 1906 earthquake. Keep in mind that much survived the 1989 earthquake here. Of course, they were two different earthquakes. I guess we'll see when "the big one" hits how severe it is compared to 1906.

I realize the dangers of earthquakes, and they scare the crap out of me. But, so what? I am happy I live here, whether I live to see tomorrow or not, I'm glad I'm here.

It's really funny because I am quite afraid of earthquakes, although in a bizarre way they are somewhat exciting - at least the little ones But, what's funny is friends of mine who grew up here always say, "Well the midwest has tornados" any time I talk about earthquakes. They think tornados are much scarier, which is kind of funny to me. Tornados are scary, but at least you can take cover. When in earthquake hits, if you're on the ground there's nothing you can do but wait it out.

Your life can end at the blink of an eye, for a number of reasons. I'm not going to not live somewhere I love because I'm afraid of earthquakes. It's just not me.

No, honey, your state really is going to go down in a smouldering pile of flames. It's not that I don't like California, and god knows I would never wish such a horrible fate on so many people... But California is going to face radical changes. The three major cities (San Diego is a little west of the fault, right?) are built on major fault zones.

LA and San Fran are actually going to disappear completely. No one city could survive the inevitable catastrophe, because it will happen.

A state that large had better pack a punch. You're talking about a land area making up approx. 75% of the entire West Coast.
