I heard that TV actually has no effect on the way people speak, because our brains process recorded speech differently from real live speech. I would generally believe this to be true, no matter how much Monty Python I watch, I am pretty sure I will never have an English accent, though it might be easier for me to imitate it.

I know people who fake the NY/NJ accent after they started watching Jersey Shore.

I agree with this too. My parents both don't have much of a NY accent like I do, but mine is a lot thicker because I spent more time with my aunts and uncles growing up who were directly from Brooklyn and lived there.
