Western Montana is the worst place I've ever lived. People there make it sound like Shangri-la but I found the people to be the most close-minded, backwards,and unwelcoming people I've met anywhere. The wages were low and the cost of living was high but the belief there was that you had pretty mountains to look at so you should be grateful to live there.

Riverside isn't a bad place. I have a good friend who lives there close to UCR. But I can truly understand how you feel.
For me it was Columbia, Missouri. I moved there from Cincinnati, Ohio for school (No wait list program) and all I kept hearing about was how Columbia was a college town and how it really is a metropolis of diversity. IMHO I believe that if a place is really diverse or big or (Insert bragging right) that the citizens of the place won't need to tell you b/c you will simply see the obvious w/ your own eyes. Cincinnati wasn't a dream come true but it would swallow Columbia, Missouri in a heart beat in a size comparison. I was the only person in my class that was from another state and my class mates got really offended when they found out that I was applying for jobs back in Cincinnati instead of staying in Columbia. I grew up in Lexington, Kentucky and couldn't wait to get out but I mainly attributed that to me growing up there as many people like to complain about the city they grew up in. Now that I've lived a lot of places I can see that Lexington would still irritate me as for me it's to small and a little to self righteous. The common factor I noticed between Lexington and Columbia is that they are both basically land locked. I'm not sure how that plays in but it is one common denominator between the two.

I have an old friend who lives in Helena. Don't know where in the state that is, but Montana seems to be a place you really fit in or don't. No in betweens.
