There are very few loblollies in Tennessee. You'll see some in southwestern Tennessee near Memphis, and a few near Chattanooga, and that's about it.
Kentucky is loblolly-less.
The mountain regions of Georgia, North Carolina, Virginia, and Alabama are practically free of them.
North-Central Alabama is also practically free of them. Texas outside of east-central and southeast Texas also doesn't have them.
Loblolly pines are nice but I generally prefer White pines. The big reason why they are grown in the South is because of all of the paper and mill industries like the fact that they do grow very fast.
So let's say you're on a roadtrip from Michigan to Florida, or maybe California to New York, or maybe even Massachusetts to Savannah. Based on only what you can see from the highway (restaurants, gas stations, place names, homes along the highway, etc) how do you know when you're in the cultural south?
When grits don't have to be on the breakfast menu, because they come with the meal whether you order them or not! (yes, this really happened to my father a number of years ago - he requested "no grits"; the waitress replied, "They come with the meal so you'll get them anyway").
Yeah I wouldn't expect most places in Ocean City to serve them since it's a tourist town, though I have had them there before.
Yeah it's mostly a vacation area for northerners IMO. Plus, when I go on vacations, I don't eat out for breakfast. Just lunch and dinner.
