Deep South is the Real South.

You can't kick more ass than the Gulf Coast, with its hurricanes and bayous, and killer humidity.

Is there anyone who thinks Cairo, Illinois, or Paducah, Kentucky are more southern than Huntsville or Birmingham?
I think some would actually claim that the delta is the deepest part of the deep south. If for no other than it's history, cotton and the racial demographics even to the present.

I'll be honest, I don't remember learning about the Deep South in elementary school geography. To the extent I did think of it, I associated it with Georgia, Mississippi, Louisiana, and Alabama. I don't think its a historical term however, and therefore I think it's actual definition is basically whatever one wants it to be.

No. If anything, Virginia is the "real" South, the original South.

Florida is an oddball because it's as south as it gets but yet it's southern-ness gets overlooked by Miami and Orlando

Maybe, but NOVA has been absorbed into the Northeast these days. Can anyone say Hampton Roads exudes the same ambiance as Biloxi or Mobile?

Well Myrtle Beach doesn't either, so there's that.

Myrtle Beach does have the same atmosphere as Gulf Shores or Orange Beach, which are close to Mobile.
