Of course most define the Deep South as Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, Georgia, and South Carolina. Arguably East Texas and Northern Florida could be thrown in as well.
But there's also an alternative definition that actually gerrymanders the entire Mississippi embayment (all the way to Southern Illinois) as part of the Delta and therefore part of the Deep South, while Birmingham and Huntsville, Alabama are the Upper South due to them being close to the Appalachians.
Is there anyone who thinks Cairo, Illinois, or Paducah, Kentucky are more southern than Huntsville or Birmingham?
I think some would actually claim that the delta is the deepest part of the deep south. If for no other than it's history, cotton and the racial demographics even to the present.
I'll be honest, I don't remember learning about the Deep South in elementary school geography. To the extent I did think of it, I associated it with Georgia, Mississippi, Louisiana, and Alabama. I don't think its a historical term however, and therefore I think it's actual definition is basically whatever one wants it to be.
Myrtle Beach does have the same atmosphere as Gulf Shores or Orange Beach, which are close to Mobile.
How exactly are you defining "atmosphere" here?????
