Thanks for your responses. I think the greatest thing I learned from this thread is that "food shelf" is a local term. I did a Google Search for "food shelf", and almost all of the food shelves were in Minnesota (maybe surrounding states, too). I did another search for "food bank", and surely enough they were all over the country. Wikipedia has an article for "food bank", but none for "food shelf".

Most people who do not use them would have no idea where a food bank is. Even poor people often know about them only by word of mouth, and many are just once-a-month distributions in other public buildings.

So, let me ask you, do you live in a rural, suburban, or urban area, and how far away is the closest:
:
Ooh, interesting thread. I live in a typical 1900-era suburb of London, England. No idea about exact distances but assuming I walk ~100 metres in a minute, then:

Bank / credit union?: 250 metres
Church (any one): 50 metres
Elementary school: 200 metres
Dollar store: 250 metres
Smoke shop: What's that?
Hardware store: 1-1.5 miles
Butcher / meat market (not in supermarket): 400 metres
Bakery (not in supermarket): 400 metres
Auto mechanic: No idea (you think I need to own a car with everything so close?!)
Bike shop: 700-800 metres
Fishing hole / river: 4 miles
Boat launch / marina: There's a river with canal boats on it about 4 miles away, no idea where the marina is though
Place suitable for hunting: No idea, probably a long way
Place the accepts food stamps (EBT): Food stamps don't exist in my country
Food shelf: What?
Athletic field: 2-3 miles
Big box retailer (e.g. Walmart, Target, Kmart, etc.): 1-1.5 miles
State park: No such thing here, though we do have national parks (don't know which is the nearest). Nearest actual park is about 500 metres away.
Indian grocery store: You mean those little shops Indian immigrants own that open really long hours and sell everything? 100-150 metres (and another within 250m)
