I did a Google Search for "food shelf", and almost all of the food shelves were in Minnesota (maybe surrounding states, too). I did another search for "food bank", and surely enough they were all over the country. Wikipedia has an article for "food bank", but none for "food shelf".

Most people who do not use them would have no idea where a food bank is. Even poor people often know about them only by word of mouth, and many are just once-a-month distributions in other public buildings.
