Quick question here.

Does the average American leave their city or ends up staying in the city they were born/raised in?

The average American leaves. The US Census Bureau says the average American moves residences nearly 12 times in their lifetime. With that many moves, at least one of them is sure to be to a new city.

Geographical Mobility/Migration - Calculating Migration Expectancy Using ACS Data - People and Households - U.S. Census Bureau

Quote:
Using 2007 ACS data, it is estimated that a person in the United States can expect to move 11.7 times in their lifetime based upon the current age structure and average rates and allowing for no more than one move per single year. At age 18, a person can expect to move another 9.1 times in their remaining lifetime, but by age 45, the expected number of moves is only 2.7.

I would say it's also influenced by where you grew up. I lived in Philadelphia for 7 years and was blown away by the number of people living there who had not been anywhere else (not even visited), relatives all live within blocks of each other and vacation involves going to the Jersey Shore (every year). I think there's more than a few "provincial" cities in the US like Philly.
