I don't understand why people consider only Evangelicals as religious?! Almost all Middle Eastern Orthodox are religious, as well as many Catholics
But it's the Bible Belt, not the Religious Belt. And it's usually Evangelicals who take the Bible more literally than everyone else. They're also more open about their beliefs and share them with people. Other areas may be just as religious, but people aren't as open about their beliefs, so those areas are different from the Bible Belt

So, Catholics and mainline Protestants DO NOT make a place bible belt. Is your thread referring to the "Bible Belt" as commonly defined, meaning evangelical protestantism only? Or are you trying to ask what states in the US does religion play an important role in? Not trying to step on your toes or anything I'm just trying to clarify what you are asking.
The Bible Belt is marked by Evangelical Christianity. A lot of the Midwest would not be included, because even though it's religious, it's mostly Mainline Protestant and Catholic. Even here in the South, there is a difference between the Mainline Protestants, Catholics, and Evangelicals. Only the Evangelicals strike me as stereotypically Bible Belt people, the other groups don't.
THis is true, the midwest is very mainline Protestant and Catholic. Lutherans, Methodist and Catholics are dominant in my state of Michigan. We are very much a religous state, but also different from those traditional bible belt states.
Add Kansas and put in a satellite to Utah. Not sure Utah could be called part of the Bible-Belt as much as it could be called the "Book of Mormon-belt".
All of Ohio, Indiana, and Illinois that's below the Interstate 80 is Bible Belt.
