I picked up on m’am and sir when I lived and worked in Houston. I use it now when interacting with customer support people, whether it’s on the phone or behind a register. It’s a great way to show respect to people who probably don’t get much of it. I’m far from a young adult, btw.

I love the culture of "Yes sir" and "Yes M'am" in Texas, as well as the fact that many men still open doors for women, will stand and offer a woman a seat, etc. Not everywhere or every time but often enough to make me smile - and it seems to be men of all ages and ethnicities too, which is nice.
We also have a lot of "cowboy culture" which brings with it a lot of courtesy and a sort of gallantry. This also cuts across ethnic lines since we have "cowboys" in every skin tone!
I don't live in a particularly rural area by the way. Mid sized metro (Tyler metro area) about an hour and a half from Dallas.

I've never met an Asian cowboy but I'm sure they probably exist...
