Best way to get roaring applause and a standing ovation in a Comedy Club in New York City? Just open by saying "It's great to be in New York." Make sure you're actually in New York when you say that. People there are no less provincial than those from Kalamazoo or Cedar Rapids.
This is silly. I know countless people from NYC that get excited when somebody that grew up in their borough gets famous or is mentioned on TV. It's not just a small town thing.
I can see this for the Bronx or Staten Island since they are way overshadowed, and for the Bronx, pretty disadvantaged. But Brooklyn, or especially Manhattan? Big deal.
Oh, and agreed, jtur, New Yorkers are no less provincial than anyone else.

The people I've heard it from were Staten Island, Bronx and Queens.

Well, sure. They are from the flyover country of the greater NYC metropolitan area. Staten Island may as well be in Nebraska for the attention it receives in national media. The Bronx is so misunderstood, most people would not set foot in it based on the decades of negative stereotypes.
Queens, on the other hand, well they have a sitcom, so they can just shut up.
Silly City-Data-ers. All people do annoying things. For every Midwesterner who is provincial, there is someone on the coasts who is provincial in his/her own unique and annoying way.
It's called being proud of where you're from. Nothing wrong with that at all.
