Just found out that a Japanese restaurant opened up in a particular ethnic neighborhood in Chicago.
I love all types of ethnic cuisine so I'm not criticizing this particular restaurant. However, this is in
a little Ukrainian neighborhood, has been for 60+ years. The yuppies started moving in a while ago
and since they did, Ukrainian immigrants can't afford to live there, the old grocery store (actually looked
exactly like it was 1950) closed, the Uk. restaurant was sold and became a Caribbean bistro/bar,
and now a Japanese restaurant? So this Uki area and ambiance is slowly rotting away & driving the
people who created and maintained it away.
What happens when poor UN-ambitious people have smart children that go off to good colleges and get careers earning 6 figures ??
What happens when those 6 figure earning kids decide to move back into the neighborhoods their poor parents live in ?
If you are lucky you will catch neighborhoods at their peak (an area that suits you and your specific taste for awhile)...but that will only last for so long until things change.
If you're suddenly surrounded by wealthy folks who have enough disposable income to drive up your living costs, shouldn't you realize that you may have to figure out a way to also profit off them?
What happens is that creative artists (musicians, designers, writers, fine artists) find cheap, albeit rougher neighborhoods that allow them to ply their craft without material burdens.
A second wave then descends on these neighborhoods, most have a bit of an entrepreneurial spirit and provide services to the first group (Coffee houses, restaurants, cooperative ventures such as copy services, mailing services, food coops)
When the neighborhood starts to look safe and is still relatively affordable. Suburban college kids move in.
Next the Douchebags, notice-me-dammits and scenesters move in from the American Hinterlands. These suburban jackholes living on thier parents dole become urbanized and are known as Hipsters.
Yuppies decide the area is trendy, and start buying property and driving up the rents. While the neighborhood is now clean, the many of the original creative types cannot afford to live there anymore, move out and the neighborhood loses its soul.
If you want something to complain about, ask yourself why lower income folks don't create safe, pleasant communities for each other.
The answer I got was that almost all disabled, orphans, or non-educated adults, or any other functionally unemployable people would be in that community and they'd all have to take care of them with their low incomes. They would also need to find ways to bring in supplies needed without the capital to trade with.
Well, maybe they wouldn't have to but if they don't, that would cause some serious issues as well.
Hmm... I've usually lived in save, pleasant lower income communities. I'm coming to realize part of the motivation was to avoid douchebags as mentioned above and not just the college kid types. I am also uncomfortable around elitist people.
The worst are the kind of yuppies who don't come from money. They act like they have a chip on their shoulder and are very insecure.
