Of course when midwesterners proclaim their dislike for palm trees, that is somehow commendable.
Oh, I'm from the southern california. I think palm trees are for the most part tacky. I really do love the oak trees that are native to parts of southern california though (most palms in socal are "transplants"). The oak savannah bits of socal is some of my favorite scenery in the world--it's a shame so much of it was destroyed through development and still continues to be destroyed. I do like to eat palm hearts though that kills the palm.
Anyhow, what is your favorite midwestern city?
Chicago seems the easy choice to me, but I'd be pretty happy with a lot of the other cities. Cities set on a large body of water and bisected by a river (Chicago, Cleveland, Milwaukee, Miami) always seem pretty interesting to me.
For instance, if someone says the excessive cornfields of the midwest are boring (or some flyover reference) - the midwest gets mad.
Midwest expresses dislike for palm trees, and that is ok. Sort of how when people in the midwest complain about NY & LA, and how much better midwest living is. NY or LA says the midwest is boring, and the midwest gets mad.
By far, more than other regions, significantly more, the midwest has a lot more trouble admitting it's not for everyone. I guess you could say I've made a bit of a habit exploiting that, partially for personal vaudeville, but also, because it's true.
Also, don't have a favorite midwestern city. In terms of not feeling "midwestern", I'd say Minneapolis by landslide.
My favorite destination in the midwest would have to be the Kansas City Plaza. Probably the only place I truly enjoy in the midwest.
