I'd give serious thought to where each respective move will take you in your career. Boston will probably open many more doors of opportunity for you as an accountant than Scranton/ Wilkes-Barre. However, I wouldn't be so quick to throw your plan of starting an urban redevelopment firm in downtown Scranton out the window. You might be on to a great idea-- and you might be the perfect individual for that niche market. Right now, Scranton might suck, but based on everything you've been saying for the last year, it might be on the verge of transformation in just a few years. You've stuck it out this long... why give up now? If you do stick with Scranton and eventually open up your real estate development firm, you will have one big advantage up your sleeve-- you are a local from the area, born and raised, and you are going to a college in the region. While you should certainly welcome NYers moving in, since Scranton needs more bodies, you'll have the advantage. In Boston, you'll be just one number among millions. I'm sure you already know many of the political and business leaders of the region. If not, you're in a position to meet them, now. I always thought, based on your posts, that you were more of the pioneering type, able to create the life you want to live. Are you sure you want to give up now?
I've voted for Burlington, Vermont. Wonderful downtown full of quirky shops, bars and restaurants. Very liberal vibe, colleges right in town where one can attend concerts, plays, lectures for low prices. Year round outdoor activity. And affordable!
HOWEVER, I think you should not give up on Scranton completely. A lot can happen and change before you graduate in 2009. Visit the places you are interested in on your breaks, try to get an internship in one of them over the summer, but be open to the idea that you might just stay in your favorite city. Instead of looking for all that's bad with SWB, maybe you just need to look for more good. Also, I think the city needs you, perhaps more then you know.
