Austin and Chapel Hill are also pretty great.

It depends what you're looking for.

Family Activities: Bloomington, IN - the city has weekly events at Middle Schools, Pre-schools, and parks year round for families to participate in. Indiana University also has cultural events for the whole family to attend.

Beauty: Tie between Bloomington, IN and Athens - Both are gorgeous cities, with beautiful springs and autumns. Iowa city is nice, but it's not as hilly or gorgeous as the other two.

Vibrancy: All three. For political activism, Blooming and Iowa City are HUGE in terms of campaigns and events. There are daily things happening here on both Liberal and Conservative sides (Iowa City played a huge role in the Iowa caucus a few months ago, as Bloomington is preparing for one in Indiana as well. Athens though, has the best arts scene. Iowa City, in my opinion, has the best nightlife, though Bloomington would come in at a tight second.

Athens is a great city it has alot to offer culturally, there are so many interesting shops and restaurants downtown. It has all four seasons and the fall and spring are so nice! It is also close to Atlanta if you need any big city amenities. There are very nice neighborhoods around Athens that are relatively inexpensive compared to Atlanta. Just watch out for traffic during game day it is horrible.

Here's a pretty cool thread of IOWA CITY. Look on the 7th reply, with all the pictures. It's a very beautiful, liberal and safe college town. Very green, very clean, lots of rolling hill throughout the town.
