By cheap I mean no more than $700 and by okay neighborhood I don't necessarily mean a great neighborhood, just not one where I'll get robbed/mugged.

In Minneapolis you can get a 1br in a decent neighborhood for that. You can get a studio for around $600.

You can get that in Chicago even in Lakeview not too far from Wrigley Field and a major train. The place is not going to be amazing, but not a roach box by any meals and can definitely be done.

As a matter of fact, I have a Chicago Reader in front of me and there's a good number in here advertised in some good/decent neighborhoods. Just from this publication (a few of the neighborhoods like South Shore you don't want):

Just to name a few from the first link. Tons on there and definitely not the only resource for this stuff.

Awesome, Chicago's been around the top of my list of cities to move to, so this was immensely helpful.

No problem. Yeah people would be surprised at some of the places you can get here. Rental market is hot but if you know where to look, you can find the stuff for pretty cheap. If you know people, it helps too. Very easy to live in say a 2 bedroom place even not far from Wrigley Field for $700-$800 per person. Only thing with some of the cheaper places is to check the Bed Bug Registry since Chicago is one of the worst cities for it (but some neighborhoods are definitely better than others with this stuff).

Ummm, nope. Plus Philly's "best areas" aren't exactly known as safe at night....

You can do it in Denver, but not for long. The Capitol Hill neighborhood has lots of old apartments (1910's) in the 600 sq. ft. range for around $700/mo. The rental market is booming due to lots of people moving here (scabs like me ) A slightly larger place is easily do-able for a couple for under 1k. You can walk to a main bus line, downtown business district, grocery store, bars, cafes, etc.
