in Houston you've got the lower cost of living advantage. I've only spent several days there once and based on the bits of it I saw I thought it was kind of dumpy (city proper). I'm not saying you'll have anything to worry about, I'm sure it has lots of good qualities.
In the same state actually. I like San Antonio. You can walk miles along the riverwalk, eat excellent tex-mex, and sit under a willowy tree on a cool summer evening drinking some of the best margaritas I have ever had. Also the cost of living is kind.

It's nowhere near as "dumpy" as other cities. Thats the last thing I would ever saw unless you were on 45 north the whole time.
Cool. You should like Houston then. It really does have everything.
I mentioned car culture because a lot of posters on City-Data prefer cities where they can live without a car and get around on bike or using mass-transit. Houston isn't that type of city and gets a bad rap on these forums because of it.
I've never been there, but have always heard that Houston has the least amount of public transportation of any city or comparable size. Any other city of that huge size would have a train or subway system. I've heard also that Houston has no zoning laws, which results in a wide assortment of buildings of varying purposes (residential and commercial), juxtaposed next to each other without regulation. And the summers are very hot and humid.
It REALLY depends on what is important to you in life, what you're into, what you do and what kind of cities you enjoy.
For me, yes, there are a lot of cities better than Houston- but what is one person's hell is another person's paradise.
