Didn't see anyone else put this up but I thought it was interesting.

It's a map tracking dollar serial numbers showing fuzzy borders between areas demonstrating spending habits and territory. For instance, dollars tracked from Kansas City are found all over KS and MO, but not much outside them.

The second map on the link is similar but it tracks long distance calls.

One thing that struck me as odd, the maps show that Arizonans and New Mexicans rarely spend money in each other's states but we call each other a lot.

Very interesting. In a lot of cases physical features (blue ridge mountains, Mississippi river) seem to play a bigger role than state lines, but in other places the state lines form pretty clear boundaries.

I suspect the region lines are also the boundaries of media markets.

Its interesting that in the NE there is no boundary between NYC/Philly/Balt/DC which include three seperate Federal Districts yet Boston (a 4th Fed district in the region) remians distinct

The Federal Reserve Districts definitely look similar, but there are some pretty significant differences. You noted the NYC-DC run together. Another one is that Virginia and West Virginia are in the same district, but there is a pretty big boundary in the money line (probably b/c of the Blue Ridge/Appalachian mountains).

Anyone have any ideas what causes that big boundary in southern Georgia? Just Atlanta's sphere of influence running out or something else?

From the article . . .

Yep. Pretty much.

Do you think one of the issues may be WHO tends to use cash at the stores instead of debit cards, credit cards, etc., and whether those people are not as mobile as the ones that do?

To me that's a very good point.
