just curious, for those with 20+ paid vacation days per year, what type of jobs you have? public or private sector? most of my non-expat american friends who spend a lot of time in se asia work public sector. private sector is extremely rare unless self-employed (but then no paid vacation days either).
Public. Which I plan to change to private in a couple years. I will miss those vacation days.... sigh...
20 vacation days now (after six years with the company... started with 10 vacation days)
10 holidays
3 extra vacation days in the summer
Unlimited sick days
I accrue about 5 weeks a year, you can get up to 4 months before you start to lose them. I haven't traveled abroad and don't plan to until I travel to places I've wanted to visit in the US first.
But when I do travel abroad, and this is just my personal opinion, 13 days is long depending on the location. But there are people at my job who go on month long vacations every year.
Only 4 paid days off a year, but I work four tens. I have every Friday , Saturday, Sunday off. If I want more paid days off I can work long weeks to get extra paid days off. I would love more but I enjoy what I do!
I work in the private sector and accrue about 160 hours/20 days every year (my sick leave is accrued and banked separately).
I would much rather use my vacation hours for some simple downtime over an occasional 3-5 day weekend throughout the summer or during holidays than spare them in favor of an over-priced international travel package (never again, I swear).
And really, what's with this constant scrutiny over the sort of PTO hours Americans receive and what we choose to do with them? We have plenty going on in our own lives, plenty of things to see and experience within our own borders, and absolutely nothing to lose by not acquiring a false sense of worldliness by having visited ten frigging countries in the span of seven days.
Not trying to be a d*ck, but my God, these questions are getting old.
I usually take one week-long vacation, take a couple of days around Christmas and for a couple of long weekends, and carry a day or two into the next year. When I build up a surplus (once every 3 years or so) I take an extra week vacation abroad.
I thought I had it pretty good until I read this thread.

I have about 10 weeks PTO now after being there 4 years, and usually take a week-10 days a year. I'll probably end up selling some back. I like time off but it's always a pain to return and get caught back up. We also get long term sick leave and I have never used any but have about 3 weeks of that, and 10 paid holidays. With a fun, challenging and interesting job I'm happy to be at work though I still do look forward to the weekend by Friday afternoon.
