Tell that to every single person who has tried to budget the amount of time it will take to get through Chicago on the way from somewhere else to somewhere else.

In most parts of Chicago, a car is a burden. I'd still rather spend 45 minutes in my car listening to my music, not pressed up against a fat smelly guy for 30 minutes on a train. Plus, for commute, you still have to factor in the walk time to the station which is miserable when it's 20 below.

My experience like this is actually NYC but honestly, I hated it. I don't like commuting period. For my lifestyle, I can find a nice 2000SF house in nice neighborhood Dallas with backyard for the kids to play in 15-30 minutes by car from the city center for under 2K. Try to do that in Chicago.

Don't get me wrong. I love Chicago. I love the Shed Aquarium, Field Museum etc...The lake is a huge plus.

I think a lot of it is fate and desire. Pick the school you want to go to.

What makes life truly enjoyable is friends, family and a good school/work life. Both cities are huge. You will make friends.

It all comes down to whether you prefer a suburban lifestyle or an urban lifestyle. If you prefer a suburban lifestyle, Dallas is better due to its lower cost. If you prefer an urban lifestyle, obviously Chicago is better.
