That stucco/faux-Mediterranean crap has been invading the Houston area over the past few years, but the overwhelming majority of homes in the area are brick and look more typically American.
Sub-divisions represent happiness, stability, and the American dream. They embody the spirit of success and mainstream society and once one is living in a beautifully landscaped sub-division....one has acheived Nirvana.

They are the Ugly American respite. Everything that the rest of the world believes about our bland, big box culture is best personified in the suburbs. It is the death of creativity, personality, and originality. Its heart pumps fear, and its best youths cannot wait to leave it in the rearview. The truly successful do not want to live on a small lot next door to bland-new identical cookie-cutter houses with 3 trees per yard, they want something as unique as they are.
See, it's easy to use hyperbole. I personally only want to live in the middle of nowhere or the middle of somewhere. Suburbs are boring.

That's a little harsh. I'm not made for the suburbs either, but you make it seem as if suburbanites are these inferior human beings. I have loved ones who live in the suburbs, and they happen to be great people.
Many folks who now live in suburbs may have spent the first half of their lives living in "the middle of somewhere", likely in poverty. Urban living is an overrated experience, for some.

Sunbelt homes are in better condition, significantly, overall so I'd say that. Northern homes, if in good condition, do tend to have more "character," but the downside of older stuff/ having to replace/redo things isn't worth the "character" IMO.
Once again, Upstate Nancy hits it out of the park!
