MidWest (and South): Social Conservatism, simple as that.

In more cosmopolitan areas, people have a live-and-let-live attitude. When you have 10 or 20 or 30 million people squeezed into a small geographic area, everyone has to learn to get along or at least ignore people's differences. In less densely populated parts of the MidWest people don't like "different" and different is defined as "anything or anyone not like me and the people I know." (The world is full of billions of people, and most of them are not like you or I) I know many pro-business, fiscal conservative, Republicans here in the North East. The tone of political discourse has become so nasty they have to pinch their nose to support their own party... and the MidWestern and Southern members of the Republican party call them "RINO's" for not being Social Conservatives, and tell them to get out of the party, that they don't want them (and then they wonder why their party's membership is dwindling down to irrelevance).

There are many things to dislike about big metropolitan areas-- noise, traffic, high cost of living, less space, etc.

.
About 9 out of 12 million people in Ohio don't live in spread out areas. They live in urbanized areas where people are squeezed into a small geographical area. I'm not sure what the heck you are talking about. Unless, of course you associate the midwest with rural and spread out IE: N. Dakota, Iowa, etc.. with is entirely the opposite of Ohio. And then you rambled on about being conservative... uhm.. not every area of the midwest is conservative AT ALL. Northeast Ohio (for you it'd be home to "4 million hicks") is actually very liberal.. And shoot, it's densely populated!

Here are some population density maps for ya since you seem to cluster all the midwest into one category (you may be confused )

It's people like you that confuse the Great Plains as the whole midwest.

IMO, This is the reason why there should be a "Midwest" And "Great Lakes" region.. they are two strikingly different areas. Heck, The Rustbelt could be it's own region.

I think people hate the Midwest, because they think it's all rural and like Great Plains states... Ironic considering Ohio, Michigan, and Illinois are all among the most populated states.

and look, Ohio's the 9th most densely populated state

Fine with me... let the fools hate the Midwest - that means less ignorant saps that stereotype and are narrow-minded that we have to put up with

Honestly, I believe it has to do with (a) those that are not really knowing what it is that they speak of, and/or (b) those that are more urban, for example in the LA or NYC or Miami style mentality, and then harbor superiority complex over others - w/o appreciating the potential good and beauty of other places, the people, architecture, history, culture, etc..

Even Iowa has well over 1/2 of its population living in a metropolitan area. 1/3 of the state lives in the Des Moines and Cedar Rapids/Iowa City areas. Only around 5% actually live on a farm.

Looking at this board you get; People who hate the Midwest, People who hate Texas, People who hate California, People who hate Florida, People who hate Arizona, etc etc. In many cases they are people who have never been to the place they are complaining about. I have to admit I have been pretty free with my complaints too, but it seems pretty grumpy

Why do you need ocean access, are you a pirate? What can you do in the ocean that can't be duplicated in the Great Lakes?

I've never even heard of TaterTot Casserole?! What are you talking about? LOL Pathetic. And I live right across the street from a beach on Lake Erie. Works fine for me! How many people on the coast actually have GOOD ocean access? Blown out of proportion. I lived in Washington DC, certainly didn't have the best beach access. But it's on the East Coast.. so it must have good beach access right? LOL. I stayed in Manhattan for an extended time.. the beach access wasn't ideal - and the beaches were disgusting.

Midwesterners have abandoned most of their decent architecture, and are making only token efforts to rehab the rest.

Are you joking?? Name ONE person who lives on the coasts that doesn't hang out on the beach/rocks at least 4-5 times per week.

After living in Maine for 20 years I can name dozens who live right by the coast and never walk the 2 or 3 blocks down to the rocks or beaches. Same as I can name dozens who live within a mile or two of Lake Michigan, Lake Huron, or Lake Superior (Don't know anybody who live on the other 2 Great Lakes.) who don't go down to the shore. I am talking years at a time in both places.
