Honestly, they look nothing alike, but in terms of street level feel, size, walkability, public transit, I would say San Francisco actually comes the closest to Montreal. But still, Montreal is a very unique city and there really is nowhere else like it on earth (I feel the same way about San Fran).
I dont think NYC is anything like Montreal, not sure why ppl are comparing them. Not saying one is better but they are not alike, AT ALL.
Montreal shares the same architecture as New York and Philadelphia, but not with San Francisco, and of course Montreal's weather is nothing like San Francisco's and the demographics don't match either.
Montreal looks like a typical North American city with the only difference that it speaks French.
It is Quebec City which has a bit of European flair in its old center.....but I would say Boston, New York City, and San Francisco would be similar since they are big cities with good or moderate public transportations like Montreal.
I completely disagree with this - Montreal looks quite unique for North America, beyond the language issue.
A quick Flickr search for "Old Montreal" will return some dashing photos of Montreal's European style center. Sure, Quebec has far more of this flair, but there are parts of Montreal doesn't look anything like the typical North American city.
But, Montreal has a straight grid street pattern, very unlike anywhere in Europe. Quebec City and central Boston are the only North American cities I know of with crooked, winding streets like Europe has.
As I haven't been to Montreal (I might get a chance to visit this summer), I can't really say anything about size and "feel", but Boston is very walkable, and from what I've seen in pictures the two cities look similar in parts...
Montreal is a city with multiple personalities. It's got a little bit of New York, some Boston, some Philly, some Baltimore, some San Fran, some Europe... heck it can even be tacky a la Miami (white jeans/exotic car -style)
