Would like to move and work in New York. Help (look for a job, university)

Let me explain...

I'm a university graduate with 2 yrs work experience in IT and investment banking. After spending the last 3 weeks in America and really thinking hard about my future i've decided that my current company isn't taking me on the road i would like to take.

So I’ve come up with this conclusion; to leave London and head to New York to see what opportunities there is. I'm planning on working in New York for a year and if everything doesn't work out according to plan I’ll come back to London. I'm 23yr old with no kids or wife, just mom and dad, so i have nothing to lose.

My question is what do I have to do in terms of visa application. What visa do i need? what are the procedures? Any info will really be helpful.

Look for a job first.

If you find an employer who wants to hire you then they will arrange all of that for you. You'll sign a few papers and their administrative staff will take care of it.

More important is to make a connection with the ex-pat community here in New York. They can help you make the transition and give you advice. There are a few Brits-in-NYC forums around. Check them out.

American IT companies routinely sponsor highly qualified foreign workers for work visas that permit them to live in and work in the U.S. for a certain amount of time (I believe it is conditional upon employment with the company). With your experience, it's worth a shot to simply apply to many many many American IT companies and investment banker firms and one of them may be willing to sponsor you. It's probably your best shot at obtaining a visa.

So I’ve come up with this conclusion; to leave scotland and head to New York to see what opportunities there is. I'm planning on working in New York for a year and if everything doesn't work out according to plan I’ll come back to scotland. I'm a 20yr old with no attachments .
My question is what do I have to do in terms of visa application. What visa do i need? what are the procedures? Any info will really be helpful.

Without a job and sponsor, you can only visit here. You don't need a visa to visit from the UK, as you know.

I don't want to discourage you, but air conditioning installation and servicing companies are unlikely to sponsor a foreign worker. It's a complicated and costly process for them and there are plenty of citizens to fill those spots.
