Hello,

I'm looking to buy a new car and thought I would save 2-5 thousand by buying in a state that has no sales tax.

Have a great day!

William

I know Delaware doesnt..that's pretty far from here though.

Your location says Oak Park, IL. Come on over to NWI to get your car.. we have 6% compared to 8.75/9%. Saving some money is better than not saving any money at all

Well, I will say a few things.

First, as far as I know Alaska, Oregon, Delaware, Montana, and New Hampshire have no state sales tax. However, some cities still have local tax.

Second, someone can correct me if I am wrong, but I believe that the Sales tax is paid not where you buy the car, but where you register it. So, If I live in Colorado and buy a car in Montana, I pay sales tax when I register the car In Colorado.

Thanks. I found a web site with the list I was looking for, but it would post cleanly....

I still figure that Illinois S.O.S will make me pay when I register it.

Here's the list: NO SALES TAX

Alaska
Delaware
Montana
New Hampshire
Oregon

Have a great day!

William

Yes nice try, but your going to wind up paying that sales tax in one form or another regardless. New Hampshire has no sales tax indeed, but the grass isn't always so green: you do pay a hefty local tax to register your vehicle and whether you pay it to the town or the state, they will sock it to you regardless of where you buy your vehicle. If you buy it in NH but register it in another state, that state still gets you on the sales tax.
If you want to save, don't concern yourself with what state you buy the car, but rather what state you register it in. That some times is easier to get around if you have an address you can utilize in another state where you can receive any kind of mail. Some states certainly are cheaper than others when it comes to car registration fees and taxes.

As everyone else said, you'll get spanked in your state when you go to register it there. A friend of mine just moved to TN from Maryland. She went to register her truck - which currently has Maryland plates - and they said that since she'd purchased it in Maryland less than 6 months ago, even though she paid taxes on it there and lived there at the time, she'd have to pay tax on the full purchase price here when she registered it. They said they recommend she wait another 2 weeks to register it to save herself about $2000. Great, eh?

Yes, but not really difficult to get away with if... A. You rent where you actually live B. You can access another residence in another state close by easily and utilize that address across the board.

A & B are still Tax Fraud. The bottom line is that you are not a resident of that state. The sole purpose of that address is for you to avoid paying taxes.

You can can try and get a way with it in hopes that they go after the bigger fish but you take the risks - I just advised on the situation. FYI: Colorado did start going after people who do such things. They started with RV owners (since there is much more $ of Tax Fraud there) and I am not sure how far down the line they are.

You have been warned.
