^That post is why you need to define your terms. There are soooooo many different definitions of nerd. Do you mean math majors? Do you mean know-it-alls? Do you mean people who enjoy things that aren't in the "mainstream?" If you ask a self-identified nerd to define it for you, she will probably say it means someone who is thoughtfully and openly passionate about his likes and dislikes.
hipsters aren't always nerds though. lot of them major in liberal arts stuff, not engineering or science.
Not to mention universities also attract jocks and those aspiring to join fraternities/sororities. Boston is an alcohol and sports obsessed town. I will concede that some nerds may exist in Boston but it is definitely not one of the nerdiest.
Yeah I'd go with Bay Area tops and Seattle & Boston tied for 2nd with most nerds per capita. Detroit's a good call on non-nerdy but also New Orleans, Vegas, Cleveland, Memphis, & Fresno.
If you say engineers are nerds, then Detroit has just as many as Seattle, Boston, and the Bay Area. There are more engineers per square mile in the Detroit area than probably any where else in the country.
I don't think the term 'nerd' needs to be defined. Watch an episode of Big Bang Theory and you will see what a nerd is like. A socially awkward know it all that's into Comic-Con related material coupled with STEM related fields.
STEM = science, technology, engineering, math.
With that said:
Silicon Valley by far has the largest number of 'nerds' in a concentrated area, therefore, San Jose is a nerd mecca.
What's your reasoning for Atlanta not having many nerds? In my experience, Atlanta seems to have a moderate amount that is increasing as it concentrates on attracting young business professionals.
