Just watch how there are a lot of miserable commuters in NYC transit. People hate taking the Subway as much as they don't like to admit.
Having lived in Chicago for many years, I can say that is not at all true. I used to be able to travel from neighborhood to neighborhood with ease using public transportation. Perhaps you are only familiar with cities in which you cannot do this.

I have also traveled through New York in this manner although I have not lived there.

New York is probably easier than Chicago, as the subway covers more. Many whine about the subway, but I doubt most hate as much as knowledgeiskey implies.

I think most are aware of the flexibility of a car.

This is true regarding the Chicago subway but I was thinking in terms of the bus. I used to travel from various neighborhoods by transferring from one bus line to another. Also, the El train was pretty good too. I wouldn't argue that cars are more flexible and certainly everyone is aware of that but public transportation, if it is good, can get you where you are going without the hassle that driving can bring.

All in all, it is my belief that it should be a choice, car or public transportation, and putting a stigma on either one as many people do is just ridiculous.
