We're getting crosseyed from looking at the map of the US :P
Maybe this will ring a bell for someone?
We're a family with three young kids looking for a long term, if not permanent home. We live in Pittsburgh, which is too big for us, and much too mountainous. We previously lived in upstate NY, which was nice, but won't work because of our jobs - details unimportant, but PA and NY are off the table.
We'd love a city on the smaller side - say <100,000 residents. University would be a huge plus. We love nature, the outdoors, snow!, and (last on the list, but still) water. We dream of rolling hills and trees. We'd love a place that's somewhat crunchy, and supports local small business. A nice farmer's market and strong library system would be great. We dream of building a home on 20+ acres and gardening. We work in healthcare; a hospital with 200+ beds is ideal.
Family is on the east coast, but we're starting to feel like we probably need to look at the entire US.
Please help us brainstorm?
Any and all thoughts are greatly appreciated! Cities or even just states...

What is very ironic is that there is an Upstate NY community/area that fits pretty much everything you want. With that said, I'd say that maybe places like Oberlin OH, Durham NH and Amherst/Northampton MA may work.
I thought about Asheville, but if Pittsburgh is too mountainous, wouldn't that take Asheville off the list? I thought about Burlington VT too, but wasn't so sure.
We've thought about Asheville. If only there were less heat, more snow/cold, and less mountains...
& yes - upstate NY would have been a great fit!
Off to look at the other places mentioned.
If you don't know, look into Ithaca too. Cayuga Medical Center actually has 204 beds, it is in Cayuga Lake in the Finger Lakes, has a great farmers market, has a crunchy/liberal vibe, they support local businesses along with its own currency, it has a great library system and it is the second most educated metro in the US. You can find homes with plenty of land right outside of the city of Ithaca too.
