For Illinois it's hands down University of Chicago, absolutely stunning:

I think U of C is beautiful, but I think NU's lakeshore setting is unmatched.

I mean to each their own, it's just you rarely hear that around here, people thinking NU is more beautiful.

I like new, modern-looking college campuses with perfectly-manicured landscaping.

I suppose I'm an anomaly on this forum.

One would have to think Pepperdine is the one to beat for nicest in the nation.

Nicest I've seen in Illinois = Augustana in Rock Island.

Nicest I've been on personally = IU/Bloomington which probably takes the prize for the state of Indiana. UW-Madison is nothing special for the most part but the lakefront setting of the Union Terrace is superb.

It was entirely built in Italian Renaissance architecture, and one of the last to be built in a classical architecture, instead of modern functional.

Northwest Michigan College
in Traverse City was built in a dense woodland, with only enough trees removed for the footprint of the buildings.

Alice Lloyd College, in Pippa Passes, Kentucky, is picturesquely tucked into a holler:

At the other extreme, Sir George Williams University was, for its first 50 years, located in the top nine floors of the YMCA building in downtown Montreal, Quebec, before it merged to become Concordia University in the 1970s.

Can't beat Pepperdine or UC San Diego for location. The UCSD campus itself is a bit meh though, even for a modern campus.

My personal favorites, somewhat in order:
NJ - Princeton
NH - Dartmouth
VT - Middlebury
NY - Cornell (Colgate not far behind)
MA - Harvard

Others 'top in their state' among those I've seen
IL - U of Chicago
CT - Yale
ME - Bowdoin
PA - Penn, CMU (my bias)
OH - Ohio U
CA - I liked Caltech somehow?? but yeah, Pepperdine

CMU, seriously?

Being right next to Schenley Park is a definite bonus. But much of the campus itself is a borderline eyesore.
