Really? I always felt that Northwestern's campus was a little underwhelming for the status and ranking of the school, it's age and also it's location. I actually find UIUC to be prettier than NU (architecturally speaking).
For Illinois it's hands down University of Chicago, absolutely stunning:
One would have to think Pepperdine is the one to beat for nicest in the nation.
Nicest I've seen in Illinois = Augustana in Rock Island.
Nicest I've been on personally = IU/Bloomington which probably takes the prize for the state of Indiana. UW-Madison is nothing special for the most part but the lakefront setting of the Union Terrace is superb.
In Louisiana it's Tulane/Loyola University sitting in picturesque Uptown New Orleans or Louisiana State University in Old South Baton Rouge sitting on University lake. Most of the buildings in both campus predate WWII, some even WWI.
LSU Baton Rouge was built at its present location in 1926, and among those with no historic old buildings or landscaping, it is regarded as one of the most beautiful 20th century campuses. It was entirely built in Italian Renaissance architecture, and one of the last to be built in a classical architecture, instead of modern functional.
At the other extreme, Sir George Williams University was, for its first 50 years, located in the top nine floors of the YMCA building in downtown Montreal, Quebec, before it merged to become Concordia University in the 1970s.
Can't beat Pepperdine or UC San Diego for location. The UCSD campus itself is a bit meh though, even for a modern campus.
My personal favorites, somewhat in order:
NJ - Princeton
NH - Dartmouth
VT - Middlebury
NY - Cornell (Colgate not far behind)
MA - Harvard
Others 'top in their state' among those I've seen
IL - U of Chicago
CT - Yale
ME - Bowdoin
PA - Penn, CMU (my bias)
OH - Ohio U
CA - I liked Caltech somehow?? but yeah, Pepperdine
Being right next to Schenley Park is a definite bonus. But much of the campus itself is a borderline eyesore.
