I haven't been to all these cities, but I would say New Orleans. I'm not a huge fan of electronic dance clubs, or overpriced VIP clubs with cover charges and pretentious people, and I love more old school American music. NOLA always has a really fun vibe and is very cultural. Only downside is the surrounding areas can be dangerous.

Atlanta: fun, not pretentious, some classy, some come as you are, stays open late, a variety of options, easy to engage and conversation and not too much ice to break. I had fun down there.
I don't really rate Atlanta that high on the bucket list, but in terms of nightlife it's one of the best cities in the country, just good times and good people. That was my experience there anyway.

Don't want to sound racist, but did you notice a different vibe (in terms of how the people were, friendliness, openness, general style, aggression) in clubs that were mainly black compared to those that were white?

New Orleans has my favorite nightlife in the country because it seems and feels more real and does not seem to have as many phony and fake people as most of the other cities.

Did you just call Atlanta's nightlife not pretentious?
Man, I thought it was. That's not a knock on the city, I actually really like Atlanta but I do find it pretentious and I also come from a pretentious city so it felt like home.

No, that wasn't my experience in Atlanta, but I did go to gay bars there so maybe that made a difference.

LOL, no it wasn't pretentious at all. Though of course my experiences isn't the sum of everyone else's and I was just a tourist/visitor so I'm sure the is a vastly different perspective than a resident's. Having lived in Boston and Seattle a lot of the bars in those cities had clicks and one really had to break the ice (not always but quite often). Atlanta (at least the gay bars there) was pretty open and friendly and I ended making new friends/acquaintances to hang out with while spending time in the city. It was just an exceptionally good time and friendly compared to other cities I've visited.

New York around the village or in BK... I've always had the most fun there. Chicago runner up.
My exp in New Orleans is that it was a tad on the blue collar side, just a lil *toooo* laid back and extraverted for me. I can only do it for a day or so. I like ATL nightlife better for a southern city.

I would say NYC because it has something for everyone. I'm not always in the mood for the same type of experience every time I go out.

New Orleans used to have a pretty big electronic music scene. Granted it wasn't Miami or even Dallas for that matter, but it was up there none the less.
Not sure what its like these days.
Lafayette of all places what hot too. It was the Florida Break Beat influence that spread there in the 90's-early 2000's.

Regular bars and music venues are what I enjoy...... those electronic dub crap and rap crap nightclubs are nothing but trouble, nothing good happens at those places
I would say SF, Nashville or Austin would be the closest
The worst would be Miami
