Hope it's ok to post this here. My family and I are wanting to move out of North Carolina, but aren't quite sure where to move. We've been thinking about Vermont, New York and more recently, Maine. Not all of our family will be moving, so we need to be within 24 hours of NC, but don't want to be in the South. We're looking for some of the same things everyone else wants : good schools, low crime, decent healthcare etc but our list also includes:
A love of snow - where we live now gets 60 to 120 inches annually
Access to a college
Outdoor activities ( festivals, hiking, etc)
Not necessarily liberal, but not close-minded
Farmer's markets
a good beach - whether it be a lake, ocean or river
Medical Marijuana - wouldn't be a deal breaker, but my SO has chronic health issues
Preference for holistic healers - acupuncture, naturopath, chinese medicine, etc
Average rent where we live now is about $1400 for a decent 3/2, so less than that would be amazing. I will be working on my Master's degree, he'll be finishing his BS, so we will both need at least a part time job. We live simply - don't have a car payment, use credit cards, etc
We are hard working people, who love our kids and would love to eventually get off the grid, but in the meantime, live as simply as we can. We want to live in a community who isn't full of "fake" southern friendly. (Sorry, if that offends anyone) We have good friends, and make friends easily, but don't enjoy being condemned because we aren't the "right" religion.
Lol, sorry for the lengthy post, thanks so much if you've read the entire thing. Any suggestions would be very much appreciated.
If you are looking into NY, Plattsburgh may be a good choice due to having a state college, a free city freshwater beach, is minutes from the Adirondacks, is across Lake Champlain from Burlington VT, averages 60 inches of snow, has a farmers market(even in the winter) and has even had an openly gay, Republican mayor in recent years. It is more affordable than Burlington and could be allow for you to go back and forth. Ithaca is another choice up here. Oswego, Brockport and Fredonia, among others, may work in terms of smaller NY locations that fit most or much of the criteria.
