Nah, Texas is pure America.... and what would America be without Texas? As much as people pick on Texas (admittedly, I do this sometimes too), it really is one of the most quintessentially "American" places I can name.
Texas will eventually turn into one big oil refinery anyways.
Actually, there hasn't been an oil refinery built anywhere in the entire US since the late 70s, nor will there be one anytime soon. This has to do with the EPA and various regulations enacted under the Carter administration. And, despite having had three Republican pro-business presidents (two kinda-sorta semi quasi from Texas) since Carter, no one has overturned those regulations. So, even if Texas were to seceed, I doubt any of the Republican leadership here would go to any lengths to expand our refining capabilities. If you knew anything about oil, oil production or oil refining, you'd also know that the US has pretty much hit peak usage, and even if our population expands considerably more, our oil usage won't. The biggest demand for more oil is coming from China and India, and they've got plenty of coastline to build their own refineries. We've scaled back our nitty-gritty blue collar oil operations in this country, and have become, for lack of a better word, managers of the industry. In other words, in the future we won't be building new refineries, we'll be building new office highrises.

Back to the question, if any of the big four superstates were to seceed, the US would be in major trouble. Without California, Texas, Florida and/or New York, the US's economy would be headed for disaster. These four states combined have a larger GDP than the other 46 states combined. Washington won't allow these states to go anywhere, not even if they wanted to.
Plus, don't you realize how silly a map of the US would look if any one of them were to seceed?

If my definition of "America" had anything to do with Sarah Palin and small towns, do you think I would have spent all of my time in large, diverse cities and even lived internationally (check my location in the upper right hand corner of this post)?
I'm not the biggest fan of Texas, but the state's spirit is 100% "American."
Wouldn't it make war we fought years ago with the Mexicans meaningless? I'd say no, keep Texas. Texas is a big state, but nowhere near enough I think to be its own country. It's too much like the rest of the United States.
As a Brit who lived in Texas, in some ways it is its own country.
I love the way that the people there are so proud of their State.
Nowhere else have I seen the State Flag fly in such numbers.
Should it be its own country?
Not for me to say, though I think it may be stronger within the US than without.
