Why ? Because people in the south dress different than people in the north. It warmer and that why you see more girls in skirt or dress. The preppy look in north is more a fashion statement. In south they just dress up more .They not showing of or making fashion statement like people in the north. A family making $10,000 a year or less , dresses up .

In the north you have two times of people . People who dress preppy/making a statement ( I have money or I'm better than you ) or people dress sloppy .In south people just dress up more .

I never seen southern person dress sloppy or showing off.

And some of the girls in north dress like tomboys !! You will never see southern person dress like that.

Never heard the term "Southern preppy" before this thread.

My Southern Belle daughter moved to Northern Virginia and the first comment about the area was "Mom, they say they are Southern but they are not."

She had gone to a baby shower that afternoon in her pretty dress that would have been the norm here on the NC/SC line. Everybody else wore shorts. They could have left the shower and gone out to work in their yards.

I agree with this. One of my better friends was a Texan from the Austin area, and while his family had some money (not a lot, but enough) even when he dressed down he was dressed up (polos and such). Heck he would tell me that what I went to church in wouldn't be dressy enough for down south, and I wore Khakis and a short sleeve button up shirt. I think people just dress up better in most of the south. Up in the North (or west since Nebraska could be a Western state according to some) just dressing up and wearing a button up shirt and khakis for class in college was considered dressy and people asked if I had a job interview. I just liked to look nice (and I hardly come from money).
