Winter is almost here! Let's compare the winter climate in the city or town you live in - average temperature for Dec., Jan., Feb., and Mar.; average annual snowfall in inches; plant hardiness zone.
Here are two examples:
Baltimore, MD. "Charm City"
Dec. - 36.7 F, Jan. - 31.8 F, Feb. - 34 F. 8, Mar. - 44.1 F
21" snowfall
zone 7b - 8a
------------------------------------
Philadelphia, PA "The City Of Brotherly Love"
Dec. - 35.8 F, Jan. - 30.4 F, Feb. - 33.0 F, Mar. - 42.4 F
This is measured at the Airport at sea level, and since elevation varies from sea level to 8,500 feet, climate varies greatly in the city. Snowfall in some parts of town (habitable parts of town) can double that of the airport.
In Maryland near Washington, D.C., it is cold in the winter the majority of the time - with low temps in the low-30s and highs in the mid-40s.
However, there is a lot of variation in the weather. Some days can get into the 50s-70s and Springlike. Other days with arctic cold air can get down to single digits and even colder with wind chill. A lot of mixed sunshine, rain, freezing rain, sleet, snow, fog and a blizzard every 5-7 years.
Average precipitation combined is only 1.6". We blow our snow off our driveways with leafblowers
