Just curious what people might suggest!

-I'm looking for at least a "medium-sized" city/town. Larger is fine too!
-I'd like to be able to get to most places in a car (a.k.a., not be required to use public transportation to get places, for the most part).
-I'd like to be able to rent in a pretty safe place where I can "get away" from being constantly surrounded by people/commotion. (Preferably somewhere within the city, but JUST outside of it would be okay too.)
-If possible: I'm turned off by places that have a really "clicky" feel, or wherein it's particularly hard to meet new people.

Thanks a lot!

Is there a specific region of the nation you suggest? Climate? Political preferences (liberal, conservative, don't care)? If this is all your criteria, just about any metropolitan area between population of 1 million and 2 million would work for you.

Thanks, I thought this might be the case, but I wasn't sure. I guess I'm just curious if people have any suggestions that they feel would fulfill these things particularly well.
For the sake of this exercise, I don't really care about region or climate.
I was under the impression that most metropolitan areas are relatively liberal, regardless of region- am I wrong? Haha. Forgive my naivety. I don't care much about this, unless the area is particularly conservative.

I would note that I lived in Chicago for a while- I think this would come close to fulfilling your criteria. I would be skeptical as to reliably getting around in a car (as far as parking and being w/in close walking distance... I always walked/took public transport when there), and I did feel it was kind of "clicky". Not meaning to bash the city, just kind of trying to give an idea of where I was coming from.

There's hundreds of possible cities.

I'd obviously recommend Charlotte.

Charlotte was the least "clicky" city I've lived in. I seemed to make friends very easily there compared to anywhere else I've lived. The cities with a high population of transplants are going to be more open than cities that are mostly natives who still hang with the same people in their 20s as they did in Kindergarten.

I'd recommend another NC metro, Durham/Chapel Hill. It has far less suburban sprawl than Charlotte and attracts people from all over the US/world to attend school at Duke or the University of North Carolina, as well as those who transfer in to work in the huge Research Triangle Park in Durham....people are very open to meeting new friends and overall being social.

College towns may work too. Good sized college towns like Ann Arbor MI, East Lansing MI, Iowa City IA and Champaign-Urbana IL may work.
