The growth economically and population wise is there, the main issues for the South long term are the persistent areas of poverty and poor health outside the metro areas. The life expectancy gap is now huge in most Southern states, here in KY there's an 11 year gap in men's life expectancy in the affluent areas of the Bluegrass and the SE Coal Fields.
Some states are seeing increasing levels of political extremism which could threaten growth. Texas is going to start allowing anti scientific "science" books in schools that teach that the earth is 5,000 years old and climate change is controlled by God. They also have a law that for voter ID you can use a gun permit but not a college id (because gun owners are usually Republican while college student are usually Democrat). That's the same type of stuff the Nazis or Mullahs in Afghanistan like to do. But other Southern States on the Atlantic coast especially seem to be moderating politically
If this nation ever recovers from the orgy of spending and socialism it has endured it will be lead from the south. We have pro business tax laws, we have less regulation, we have less unionization and we still have American style capitalism here. Much of what made America economically successful is still intact here. Hundreds of thousands have moved here, started businesses here and brought their financial assets here because they are fleeing the socialist parts of America. The phrase "the south will rise again" implies a new confederate army, but really its going to mean southern economic power. The north has had its days of domination, and they are now over.
Sounds pretty clear what your political party is. To each their own I suppose.
Also, the north's domination of economic power is nowhere near over. New York is and will probably always be our nation's largest and most influential American city we have. There are still MANY flocking there as well proven by the numbers on the census site.

This hits the nail on the head. Improvement on these things will do wonders for the south. Also, increased investment in our downtowns. Coming to the realization that the suburbs are NOT an efficient way of living nor is it good for the environment (EG: Driving 20+ miles to work. Developing subdivisions and strip malls with huge surface parking lots) will also do a lot to help.

I agree. I think about what a sprawling city will look like 50 years from now. What will become of all those cookie-cutter gems and miles of freeways? They're bound to run out of land one for that kind of development one day.
No doubt things like worker safety regulations, 40-hour work weeks, food labels, seatbelts, limits on toxins in food and children's toys, environmental protections, and other types of godless communism that have truly made life miserable.
