Many similar lists people have posted, but here's my 2 cents--
1. New York City (culture, fashion, media, tv/movies, major icon)
2. Chicago ("Americana")
3. Los Angeles (film, tv, hollywood, surfing culture, beach culture, food)
4. Washington, DC (political power, patriot symbolism, the capital)
5. Boston (history, culture, and "Americana")
more, for kicks--
6. San Francisco (street cars, exotic influence, silicon valley, culture)
7. Seattle (Starbucks, Microsoft, grunge and chill vibe symbolism)
8. Detroit (automobile, manufacturing and tough, American quality)
9. Miami (tropics meets America, retirement destination, vacation, beach chill vibe)
10. Nashville (country music and music capital, heart of the south in many ways, destination for entertainment)
close ties to 10 are Las Vegas and New Orleans...
Speaking for my city, Seattle could have a case for top 10. It would rely on Boeing, the military, the seaport (including Tacoma), and other techs (the cloud especially) in addition to Microsoft.
jjbradley, I saw Nashville on your list and guessed at your location...yep.

I would add Amazon for Seattle. Amazon has a huge impact on people all over America and many other parts of the World. Seattle punches way above its weight here for a city of its size.

San Francisco is not only larger than Atlanta (eight something vs. seven something), but also punches way above its weight.
