Pittsburgh has the natural beauty of steep hills all around and pretty riverfront vistas for its small, fairly dense urban core. It's a good recco in my opinion. Philly lacks the natural beauty in the city, but about 30 minutes outside of Philly, the countryside is amazing, with rolling green hills, rustic farmland and quaint towns with early American architecture--truly some of the best scenery in the Northeast in my opinion.
Of course San Francisco is the knockout winner here, given these criteria. It doesn't have snow-peaked mountains within sight, but they are just a couple of hours away. What it does have is a sparkling bay, steep hills and small mountains, amazing views of islands in the Bay and perspectives on the City, rocky cliffs, seascapes, micro climates, huge readwoods, and great amounts of open space.

I agree, I think Pittsburgh is a very beautiful city. It's setting is awesome, but the city just has so much depth as well which enhances the beauty. I'm confident that it will rise again to prominence in this century.

Walkable for sure, but definitely lacking in the "naturally beautiful" category...
It does have those rivers and mountains/hills though. Probably would have been nicer if they curtailed more of those suburbs spreading up and left more forest intact but maybe they'll get a zombie outbreak and some of it can return to nature.
I am looking for the same but choosing the East Coast. I want to be able to travel to other cities. Looking at the map you have to really like a city in the west because that is where you will be stuck unless you want to drive forever to get to another big city. The East Coast offers far more diversity as far as landscape and culture.
And while the core of Philadelphia is flat, and mostly dense cityscape, both Fairmount Park, and the city/suburbs above the Fall Line are very beautiful
I'm hesitant to put Philadelphia up there as being notable for its natural beauty. Fairmount Park is a great park, but it isn't quite nature as it is landscaped to look like nature.

See Wissahickon Gorge and Northwest Philadelphia. See Montgomery, Bucks and Chester Counties.
