Are there any left? What are some historical ones that you know of? I think Savannah, Georgia was once a major urban center in the 19th century. New Orleans has left an urban heritage. Today, I believe there are still urban towns sprinkled around in rural areas in the south.

What do you consider to be small and urban?

I would say a dense area with about a 5 block radius.

Most college or resort towns would fit.

There are countless towns in the Northeast that have dense centers. Here are a handful just off the top of my head:

Saratoga Springs, NY
Seneca Falls, NY
Plattsburgh, NY
Copperstown, NY
Northampton, MA
Lewes, DE
Stoudsburg, PA

Would a city like Albany fit considering that it was incorporated as a city in 1686? There are rowhouses neighborhoods within the city.

Or are you looking for cities that are even smaller?

Obligatory PA Coal Country mention. Shamokin, Mt. Carmel, Shenandoah, Mahanoy City, Pottsville, and any number of others...incredible built density for such small towns.
