This thread is dedicated to the attributes that many times go unnoticed, but can say a lot about the area which the symbol or words represent. Counties and towns are acceptable too.

New York City - The City (There's a subtle attitude that nickname gives off that lets you know how New Yorkers feel about their city and its role in the world. lol. )

California's motto - Eureka. Well said California, well said.

I'm a homer....love Ohio's "the Heart of it All" slogan. I also love New Hampshire's state motto "Live Free or Die."

Not sure if it counts but love the misty-eyed state tourism campaign of Pure Michigan. It really drives home how beautiful the state is despite the constant negatives paraded around by much of the media.

I think Missouri's state seal is the most hilarious thing ever:

Yes indeed good sir! We do like to be rubbed by bears.

Also St. Louis's nickname of "Rome of the West" is quite appropriate because of the awesome urban ruins that are here.

I can't help but notice that the bears are STANDING, yet they are literally DIVIDED, despite what the slogan says would happen when people (or bears) are divided!

P.S. It's also a great line from a Pink Floyd song!

I think that Maryland has a really cool and distinctive flag.

The state motto is pretty lame, though:

"Manly deeds, womanly words."

I'd suggest a change to this:

"Maryland - STILL confused about the Civil War."

Baltimore was known as "The Monumental City" for all of the statues and monuments placed around town, which is OK, if not all that cool. Later, it became known as "Mobtown" after the various riots and mob actions that occurred, particularly the Pratt Street Riot that resulted in the first combat casualties of the Civil War. In the 1970's, the City Council came up with the wholly contrived, thoroughly ridiculous, and totally nauseating nickname of "Charm City", which continues to be inflicted upon the town. "Bodymore, Murderland" is more accurate, but I guess I can understand why it's not officially used.
