I'm looking for a city that have a good balance of mountains, lots of outdoor activities (hiking, biking, lots of beautiful scenery and wildlife, and ideally ocean or swimmable lakes nearby), but also offer the perks of city life - good food, good bars, fitness community, shopping? Should have the perks of a big city but feels like a small town, if that makes sense. Ideally also close to an international airport.

Does anything fit the bill or come close?

Charlottesville, VA is one of my favorite cities that may work for you.

San Diego may work
Some of the villages on Long Island (Port Jefferson, Setauket, Stonybrook, Northport, Huntington, Shoreham)

Burlington VT may work, as it fits most of the criteria.

Albany NY, Amherst/Northampton MA and Allentown-Bethlehem-Easton PA, among others, may work too.

Put Seattle on your list. It's a city with all the amenities you ask for and close enough to the mountains, water, and forests for plenty of outdoor activitiy. You can easily get the neighborhood feel you want, depending on exactly where in the area you live, and of course SEA TAC is a major international airport. Beautiful summers with cool and rainy winters, but personally I think the rain thing in Seattle is somewhat overplayed. YMMV.

Cities in/around the Denver metro area would work well for you. Check out Boulder, Broomfield, Golden or Fort Collins.

Atlanta is 30 minutes from the southern Appalachian Mountains, is big on outdoor activities, has great nightlife/restaurants, and has a pretty good airport.
