Which city is better - Tampa versus Richmond? Which is more open minded - does not have to be extremely liberal. I am a single male that is very closeted gay. I like both cities but really do not know enough about them.

Well Tampa would be by far the most liberal/open minded. Tampa metro has the 5th highest highest population of gays in the nation, and thats is only openly gay people.

As a gay male I agree and would point you more toward the St Petersburg-Clearwater area of the Tampa Bay metro. It's more friendly than the Tampa gay scene and less pretentious.

Oddly, that's the first I've heard of that.

I've always thought of Tampa as right-leaning and conservative-leaning filled with small town Midwestern folk, small town southern folk, and mixed with a bit of military personnel.

Tampa is a bit more right leaning than neighboring St Petersburg but is still solidly Blue year to year in terms of politics as the Tampa Bay metro falls into the 55%-60% Blue majority overall. The transplant population tends toward bigger city Midwest with many from the big cities in Ohio and "Chicagoland" as well as those who moved from more densely populated SE Florida (Miami/FT Lauderdale area)...so in other words you couldn't have been much more wrong.
