I only know what I have read in this thread, it sounds like it could be an interesting place. I might have to add it to my list of places to see.

I know it's somewhere in Eastern Europe. There's a Latvian section in Chicago with typical Eastern European restaurants. Typical Eastern European women, who I consider the hottest in the world. Remembering my first girlfriend who was Polish. Yikes!

Latvia? I know it's a Baltic state that used to be a part of the USSR, so there are a good number of Russians there. One of my neighbors lived there for a few years, and he spoke Russian more than Latvian. He said that the locals are less friendly towards Russians/Russian speakers, for good reason. The capital is Riga and I don't think Latvia's relationship with Russia is good at all after Putin came to power. It probably gets a lot colder than Utah, and that's all I know.

I'm astonished!!!!
Probably because Latvia's size of teritory and population is smaller than any of states in your country.
Oh, and it seeems that stereotype - "Americans can't even find their own country on world map" - doesn't work here.

And know some replays..

Oh, you're nasty!!
I think your statement is not fair.
Because declaration "Latvian citizens voluntary helped...." seems that Latvian nation helped do those awful things. But actually there were very few people who did that(probably about 200). There were collaborators in every occupied country that time. Not to mention that over a million Russians fought against... USSR..in hugs of nazis..

They're not cutting it off but just pushing up the prices..
But we aren't so poor we were in 90's anymore so that's not the biggest challenge we got nowdays

It's true but our relationship are getting better and better.
The problem is that Russians can't stand that they don't rule Eastern Europe anymore. And our problem is that we still can't forgive that they fu**ed us up during second world war and soviet times.

I know the general stuff about Latvia that most others have posted: used to be part of the USSR, located between Estonia and Lithuania on the Baltic Sea, capital is Riga, yada yada yada (which reminds me, any Seinfeld fans remember the episode when George tries to convert to Latvian Orthodox, lol?)

My roommate actually studied very briefly in Latvia. I can't remember the town's name. Something like Valmiere. She loved it there. She had to enroll in a Latvian language class and said it was incredibly difficult and by the end of her time there, she still couldn't say "hello".

The only thing I've ever heard about Latvia is that one Seinfeld episode where George converts to the Latvian Orthodox Church just so he can marry the girl-- who ends up dumping him anyways.

The economy is actually doing pretty good, from what I hear. the Baltic States in general have quickly modernized. Estonia is one of the most internet-based nations on earth (not to pit Baltic States against each other). You dismissed them very easily. Most of Nazi Europe helped the Germans, they didn't have a whole lot of choice. Nor were they Soviet by choice. Go look up the story of the Freedom Monument in Riga.
