I want to open a small but high-end jewelry store on the East Coast, but I also have an 8 months old daughter so I prefer a beautiful, safe, green town with or near good schools with some art life but not too many snobs. Please let me know of if any of you can think of some possible cities or towns! Thanks!
I live south of Syracuse, but travel a bit, and return to the "green Mountain State" of Vermont reguarly. There is a lovely city on Lake Champlain called Burlington, which is home to the University of Vermont and a number of smaller colleges.
Burlington has some very lovely places that remind me of "the mall" in Boulder Co....High-end, quaint shops that cater not only to the local populace but also tourists. (There are a LOT of skiers! Stowe is nearby) The University has buildings that are incredible--oh! the architecture! The "suburbs" (if they can be called that) such as Shelburne are just as lovley...
To the south there is also Manchester Vt., and Manchester Center (they are sort of seperate sides of the same town) Both are high-end, lots of tourists (Stratton and Bromley Mt. are nearby) and the shops are very quaint--considering that there's a lot of outlets--Ralph Lauren, Armani, etc., the town has done an amazing job at keeping the "style" and look of a colonial New England town.
Be forwarned though--each homeowner in the town has a choice of house color (White with green shutters, white with brown shutters, etc.), which by ordinance they cannot deviate from.
Be also forwarned-- Vermonters are an interesting lot. The imports are usually people escaping the rat race, while the locals are people who are very proud of their heritage...and have maintained the attitude of their ancestors. Vt is the ONLY state I know of where the population voted in a convicted man, while he sat in jail, to run the government--Matthew Lyons, circa 1750 or something--he'd been imprisoned for statements against the governement. Lyons waited throughoput the winter in prison as his consitutuents raised his bail! Another (modern) example is Bernie Saunders--the first Socialist mayor (Burlington), the first Socialist governor of the state and now the first Socialist Senator... No matter what politial affiliation people are/were, they all seemed to agree that he's done a great job.
