Currently I live in SE MN, where I can walk around town without a care in the world, I would like to find that aspect in other parts of the country! I don't want to be scared that I'm going to be shot or raped walking down the street! It has to be affordable! My boyfriend and I will be moving together, I'm 20, he's 23 and combined we would like to be paying less than $800/month on rent incl. utilities, preferably as low as possible without compromising safety. I love the outdoors a lot but I also want to be close to a major city, about 50-100k or more and within 15-20 mins or so if possible. We do not have a college education yet, so entry level jobs have to correlate with the price of rent, a good college nearby would be great, I want to major in biology, he wants to major in computer engineering. I'm just so sick of trying to google good places to live, it isn't helping, so I would love your help! Thank you!
Check out Salt Lake City which is fairly safe, outdoors-oriented, affordable (well under $800 a month), has one of the lowest unemployment rates in the country (3.5%) and a quality public university to attend (University of Utah) which has some nice neighborhoods/housing surrounding it.
Perhaps a small city like Plattsburgh NY may work. There is a community and a 4 year college in the city, it has its own city beach free to residents, it is minutes from the Adirondack mountains and is within an hour or so of Montreal and Burlington VT. I'm not sure about jobs, but there should be something.
Cortland NY, a small city of 18,000 that is 20 minutes from Ithaca and about 30 minutes from Syracuse may work. It also has a 4 year state college, with a community college about 10 minutes away in Dryden.
East Lansing MI could also work and is a college town/suburb/city of about 50,000 next to Lansing, which has about 120,000 people. Michigan State University is right there and you should be able to find something in terms of jobs and an apartment in your price range.
There are others where it could be a nice area of a bigger city or a small/smaller city that isn't too far from a bigger city. I'll post more if I think them and hopefully, others will chime in with some other places.
