The Midwest is thriving, as far as I can tell and I don't see any evidence of a mass exodus out of the region. Yes, there are some farmers who are having a tough time and those within the Rust Belt who are down on their luck and of course plenty of people who can't take the cold winters any longer, but for the most part things are pretty solid.
To everybody who wants to leave the midwest. PLEASE, Keep leaving! If we had the population of Atlanta, Florida or Phoenix we'd also have all the problems they have too! Crime, congestion, smog, *******s, the list goes on.
I hope the cold weather scares everybody away. I like not having to deal with all the crap they do in the south.
Dying? Nope, look at Chicago! How About Madison,Wisconsin with its award winning hospitals and Bio technology, Detroit is hurting a little but the rest seems to be somewhat thriving. Its funny I don't hear anyone complain about the midwest much.
Why do I keep hearing that the job market in Chicago, and Michigan are lousy? I hear it on the radio, and from people I meet who moved
I work in real estate, and just recently I rented out one of my rooms to two people from Michigan whom both have MBA's and they say the michigan is dying, gas prices too high, no jobs.
And also how many jobs can a few corporate HQ's actually provide? Obviously it can provide quite a few, but is it enough for everyone?
How easy is it right now to start a business from scratch right now in the Midwest or is the the big corps that pretty much dominate everything?

Michigan is having problems, but Chicago is one of the fastest growing metro areas in the nation. Same with Minneapolis, Columbus, and Indianapolis.

Technically Cook County Illinois lost about 9% total non-farm employment between 2000-2005. However, the population of the metro is growing rapidly on the west and southwest sides.
Most of the population growth in the Midwest (and the Northeast) is due to a higher birth rate than death rate and international migration.
