Off the top of my head....

Honolulu, Seattle, San Jose, Salt Lake City, Portland, San Diego, San Antonio and El Paso all have pretty low violent crime rates...

Honolulu, Seattle and San Jose are the lowest of those I believe.

I've never felt safer in Utah county, Utah. People talk about the risk of rape, meth, and burglary, but I can actually walk alone anywhere at night and not feel weird. I'm a guy, but I still wouldn't fell comfortable walking alone at night in Charlotte or most parts of New York. The only gangsters in Utah county are basically wannabes who only act gangster.

New Orleans is pretty safe these days. Also, it is a very clean place in which to reside and perhaps raise a family.

I would believe North Dakota is the safest state because no actual human lives there.

Well, we aren't huge (100,000 residents), but my city of Mission Viejo, CA was rated the safest city in the nation in cities of 75,000 or more residents by Morgan Quinto!

Most parts of NYC are fine 24 hours a day. For a city the size of New York, it's incredibly safe.

If I'm not mistaken, a list I saw recently indicated that most of the New England states, most of the upper Midwest, and West Virginia are all on the top ten safest states list.

If you check within the City-Data.com site, you can find crime rates for all of the cities and make comparisons from there.
