Hi everyone,

I've been searching and searching for the right place to relocate this fall. I have visited a few places, and the search continues.

All I require is safety, affordability, and I really would love to be near the coast, in the south east.

My rental budget is about $700 a month for a one bedroom. I could possibly swing $800. I've thrown the idea of finding a really "neat" place out the window at this point, as I just can't afford it!

I need somewhere I'll feel safe, with a low crime rate.

Wants: health conscience community, small city/town feel and sense of community, bike/walkability.

Does it exist??

Thank you!

I've heard good things about Wilmington NC., though I've never been. Know somebody who moved there and loved it so much they never want to come back. And it's affordable, on the ocean, and sort of touristy. Also has a branch of the NC state university system.

Wilmingon is definitely on my radar, I'm just concerned about the high crime rate, it looks bad.

Maybe the Florida panhandle area. Say from Fort Walton Beach over to Panama City. The rent would be possible.

Post in the Florida forum in the Pensacola sub section for more specific info.

I was thinking that maybe one of the Mississippi cities/towns on the Gulf may work.

Fairhope Al is supposed to be very artsy.

With most towns/cities the crime statistics warrant further scrutiny. There may simply be neighborhoods you need to avoid. In some cities the vast majority of crimes occur between people who know each other.

Will you have a car? Will you need to be walking at night?

Most likely somewhere in the south. I'm sure if you looked hard you could find a place like that on the west coast but its gonna be slim picking unless you wanna live in a tiny isolated beach community.
