I am a 28 year old single lesbian looking to relocate somewhere in the U.S. to a place that has a large lesbian population. Upon researching, I see a lot of answers from 5-10 years ago, but nothing too current. HELP!
Durham NC has a rather larger lesbian population, a low cost of living and general availability of well-paying jobs. I'm a gay male who lived there for several years and know firsthand of the LGBT community there. It's a friendly, welcoming city which I found (and still do) a refreshing change from other communities I have lived in up and down the East Coast.
Northampton, MA would be a good place to start. It's a smallish town with enough amenities and fun things to do nearby.
I like Noho, but I'm not sure it would be a good place for a single lesbian. Most of the lesbians I knew when I lived in the area were either Smith students (thus mostly younger than the OP), or people who graduated from Smith and just sort of stuck around and became townies. Many of the latter are thus older and/or in long term monogamous relationships. But there's relatively few jobs in the area, outside of the universities, so most people, gay or straight, end up having to leave the "happy valley" anyway, meaning there's a dearth of young professionals of all sorts.
Bottom line. Northampton is undoubtedly one of the most, if not the most, lesbian-friendly city in the country. But I'm not sure if you're single and in your late 20s it's really the best place to meet someone.
Atlanta is okay. I think there is at least one thriving lesbian bar here.
Southwest Florida as well. The Ft. Myers area has always had a pretty thriving girl scene. A lot of them move down to take care of aging parents and grandparents who wanted to retire in Florida.
