New York doesn't want it - New York has plenty of other stuff. Likewise, I don't care for moving it to Philadelphia. Back in the day if the Capital had stayed in either of those cities they'd have adapted. But the government has now gotten used to a city that exists ONLY to be a playground for the government. Have you ever walked around DC? It is h*** - an urbanists nightmare. Streets vanish into massive government blocks, barricades pop up all over the place in a totally nonsensical pattern, etc. The Metro is solid, and some areas like K Street or Georgetown have vibrant commercial enterprises, but the heart of the city is a gaping hole that turns the lights off at 5 PM. At the time Washington DC was built to serve as the national capital, it was centered geographically, because the whole nation didn't extend west of the Appalachians. It was important to have a centrally located capital city because transportation and communication wasn't all that great in 1800. Now, with both transport and communications at a vastly improved level, the physical location of the capital isn't such a pressing issue.
Besides, let's face it. When people talk about moving the capital, what they're inferring is that something has to be done about the bureaucracy. Everyone here knows just as well as I do that if you moved the location of the capital, you'd just be moving that same bureaucracy along with it. If you want change in that arena, you do it at the voting booth, not by shifting locations.
